The Gilis have their own distinctive personalities… and so do their bars. Whether you want a bit of peace or a lot of parties, loud energy or quiet moments, or if you want to mix it up, there’s a bar that will match your mood.

Here are just eight:

Margarita Resto & Tequila Sunrise Beach Bar, Gili T

Tequila Sunrise on Gili Trawangan is one of the island’s favourite beachfront bars. The focus is on expertly crafted cocktails, including classic tequila-based favourites, alongside an extensive drinks menu to suit every taste. Arrive early to make the most of the daily Happy Hour.

By day, Tequila Sunrise is a relaxed spot to unwind, soak up the tropical scenery, and enjoy the laid-back island atmosphere. As day turns to night, the DJ sets the mood with an uplifting mix of house music and feel-good classics. The music brings people together, creating a lively atmosphere where travellers from around the world gather to dance and experience Gili Trawangan’s famous nightlife.

For an unforgettable night out, Tequila Sunrise is hard to beat.

Lava Bar, Gili T

The Lava Bar is lively and loud, with a casual and laid-back style. Think late‑night beach club or sports bar. It’s a popular spot, especially for people staying in the Gili Beach Bum hostel that’s part of the complex. If you want to meet people, dance, enjoy great music or take to the stage yourself on karaoke nights, then this is the place for you.

The drinks are reasonably priced and there are daily specials – maybe discounted mojitos and shots – on particular nights. Upstairs, there’s food, mainly burgers, fries and pub snacks, at the Hot Rocks grill.

Sama Sama Reggae Bar, Gili T

Sama Sama Reggae Bar has a tropical island party every night. It’s a live‑music bar on the main strip near the harbour on Gili Trawangan and the focus is on live reggae bands, as you’d expect, with rock and other styles later in the night, when the dancing starts and the crowd gets louder. The main room has a stage and dance floor and there’s also seating just outside.

Bar prices are affordable and during Happy Hour there are often half price cocktails and basic mixed drinks. This venue also offers basic but comfortable accommodation with a garden and a small pool at the back. The connected restaurant offers simple Indonesian and Western dishes, including pizza.

Ombak Bar, Gili T

It’s a versatile place for a night out on the main strip. Ombak Bar is a late‑night, high‑energy beachfront venue – one of the main party spots on the island. It hosts regular events with DJs playing house, techno, old‑school R&B and club music. There’s an outdoor party space and an indoor bar and it’s really for the young crowd that wants to party, play games and dance rather than have a quiet drink. You can sit by the water, on beanbags and loungers, then go inside and dance until late.

There are cheap mixed drinks and cocktails available, plus Happy Hour specials, ‘buy one get one free’ and occasional free shots in the evening. You’ll also find bar games, beer pong, and fire dancing shows.

Jungle Bar, Gili T

This is a late-late-night party spot at the centre of the island’s nightlife, and one of the busiest venues. It has a dance floor in an air-conditioned indoor space, with international and local DJs playing house or techno-style music. There are VIP booths and table bookings if you’re in a group.

You can have usual drinks and cocktails, with ‘specials’ and Happy Hour discounts for shots, beers and mixers, especially earlier in the evening, and free shots offered at various times.

The atmosphere is loud and social, rather than relaxed. If you want high-energy and a lively crowd, then venture into the Jungle.

Lucky’s Bar, Gili Air

If you want a beach bar with great sunset views, then you’re in luck. Lucky’s Bar offers direct beach frontage on the southwestern part of the island, with seating right on the sand. On most nights, it has a quieter, more relaxed and laid-back feel. If you’re planning to stay, there’s accommodation available, in air-conditioned island-style bungalows.

Expect the usual beers, mixed drinks and cocktails, with regular happy‑hour deals. When you’re hungry, you can choose better than average, simple Western and Indonesian food.

The music is not usually at top volume, but ramps up on party nights, when DJs play techno and house. You might be lucky enough to be there when there are bonfires on the beach.

Zipp Bar Restaurant, Gili Air

Zipp Bar is also a more relaxed beachfront restaurant-bar with air-conditioned bungalow accommodation. Its beautiful location on the southeastern part of Gili Air makes it a popular place for eats and drinks in the evening.

It offers a full bar service, including cocktails and wine, and Happy Hour brings in an earlier crowd. The seafood BBQ with salad buffet and sunset cocktails are popular attractions. At dinner time, there’s live music that’s more social than loud and high-energy.

For a more mellow, relaxing experience, Zipp Bar is ideal.

Sasak Café, Gili Meno

Gili Meno has fewer bars and is much quieter compared with Gili T and Gili Air. For an evening out, think low-key and relaxed, which describes Sasak Café well. It’s in a beautiful spot on the beach, on the west side of Gili Meno and you can simply sit on the sand, have a drink – the usual beer, wine and cocktails – and watch the sunset, if you prefer that to loud party nights.

The food offerings are also simple: Indonesian dishes with a few Western options. And afterwards, you can stay for a few post-dinner drinks and enjoy the entertainment, which often features traditional music.
