Suparman’s Pizza

Suparman’s Pizza is a distinctive local eatery on Gili Trawangan with a story rooted in resilience, community and creativity. Located on Jalan Ikan Hiu, the warung was built from humble beginnings following the devastating 2018 Lombok earthquake.

The story began when Ibu Rauhun, a single parent who had previously worked as a migrant worker in Malaysia and Brunei, returned to Lombok and eventually travelled to Gili Trawangan in September 2018. There, she met Pak Suparman and became part of the journey that would eventually create Suparman’s Pizza.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, Gili Trawangan was filled with debris and discarded materials. Rather than seeing this only as waste, reclaimed wood from damaged buildings was collected and used as fuel for the pizza oven. This practical solution became part of the restaurant’s identity, reflecting its rustic character and connection to the island’s recovery.

Suparman’s Pizza is more than a pizza restaurant. The menu also celebrates comforting Indonesian home cooking, including its well-known Soto Ayam and Tempe Mendoan. The food reflects a simple, home-style approach and the personal story behind the people running the warung.

The business is also connected to Suparman’s Treevolution, an environmental initiative started by Pak Suparman. Motivated by the condition of the island following the earthquake, he began a mission to plant trees and contribute to the recovery and greening of the Gili Islands. From 2019 to 2024, Suparman’s Treevolution planted more than 8,000 trees across the islands.

Another special part of the culinary story is Ibu Rauhun’s Nasi Tumpeng. What began as a homemade birthday celebration developed into a popular offering after photographs of her tumpeng gained local attention. For Ibu Rauhun, tumpeng represents much more than food. Its cone-shaped form symbolises life’s journey, struggle, gratitude and prayer.

With its combination of pizza, Indonesian comfort food and a story shaped by resilience after the Lombok earthquake, Suparman’s Pizza offers a dining experience with a strong connection to the Gili Trawangan community.
