By Order of The Peaky's Barbers

You only have to step into Peaky’s Barbershop and you’re in what feels like another world. It’s certainly like another era; there’s a definite 1920s Birmingham vibe. You’ll see gilt-framed mirrors, themed murals, classic barber’s chairs, marble-look floors and vintage-style light fittings and décor.

It´s clear there’s more on offer than just a haircut; it´s an experience – from the background music to the vintage barber’s tools.

The owner and the driving force behind the concept is Camilo Vallejo Salinas.

‘There’s a story behind the name, of course’, he says. ‘It’s a tribute to Peaky Blinders, the successful British TV series. I´ve always loved the style, confidence and brotherhood of Peaky Blinders. I wanted to create a place where every man leaves feeling sharper, more confident and part of something special. We wanted people to experience another time and place, while still enjoying the comfort of a luxury barbershop. The staff all wear black trousers, white shirts and bow ties – to add to the theme’.

He smiles. ‘You’ll get a blindingly good haircut’.

Camilo was born in Colombia and grew up in Ibiza. Even though he isn’t a barber by trade, opening a barber’s shop had always been a personal dream. His aim was to create a modern retreat for ‘lads who mean business’ – a place where they can slow down, be well looked after and leave feeling better than when they arrived.

‘It’s a passion project’, he says, ‘alongside my other wellness developments in Indonesia’.

He came to live in the country more than three years ago and fell in love with it – the people, the culture, the food ….

‘My dream is to expand worldwide. So far, I have Peaky’s Barbershops in Gili Air and in Kuta Lombok; they were good places to start as they feel so much like home. The location was strategically planned from the beginning. I knew that the main road would be the best place to showcase what we’ve created’.

What’s on offer?

Camilo describes the concept as ‘classic gentlemen’s barbering with a modern soul’. And, in spite of the vintage feel, the services and techniques are ‘cutting edge’.

Peaky’s chairs are open to everyone and the business caters to locals and international visitors, with special prices for islanders. Wherever they come from, clients experience a great haircut, genuine conversation and the feeling they´ll definitely come back.

And they do. As well as for haircuts and hair washing services, Peaky’s clients come back for other services on offer: head shaving and straight-razor shaves, facial masks, waxing, ear candling and their favourites – skin fades and beard trimming and grooming.

The ‘gang’

Camilo is obviously proud of his barbers. Lalu Zainul and Faesal Fahmi work in Peaky’s on Gili Air.

‘They’re special – talented and passionate, with great personality – and they genuinely care about every client who walks through the door. When we’re hiring new team members, we make sure they have at least five years’ experience and can work with attention to detail and absolute precision. Every barber in our crew takes pride in the work, offering clean fades, sharp trims and an immaculate finish’.

They have a great time, too. From the chairs, they hear funny stories every day and tourists come in, excited to talk about their adventures.

As Camilo recalls, ‘One client once fell asleep so deeply during his haircut that he started snoring. When he woke up, he checked his watch and said, “Mate, I came in for a haircut, not a full spa retreat!” We still laugh about that.

‘Customer service is everything in our business’, he says. ‘The team is excellent. A great haircut gets people in, but great service brings them back’.
